Students performing modern dance at SMU Indonesian arts show "GAYA"
This year, Gelar Budaya (GAYA) 2012 derives inspirations from the rich and spectacular light arts. Titled “Luminary”, which refers to something or someone that exudes light, each dance and music item will be infused with cutting-edge light effects, producing an artistic and visually aesthetic show that will tease your senses.

GAYA 2012 will feature some of the most iconic and well-known traditional dances from Indonesia, such as the crowd-pleasing Saman dance from Aceh and Janger dance from Bali. It will also be highlighted by the debut rendition of the Bajidor Kahot, a romantic and flirtatious West Javanese dance, and a contemporary dance especially choreographed for our show. The light effects in GAYA 2012: Luminary will help the audience capture the rhythm and intensity of the dances and understand the deep meaning behind every move.
Last year in “Forte”, we decided to bring something unprecedented into our musical performances: the big and loud percussions. They turned out to be a great success and now they will be the mainstay of our musical performance in Luminary. The groovy beats from the percussions fits seamlessly with the dance moves and they give the show a modern touch to go along with the traditional dances. With the aid of the light effects this year, you can expect an even more colourful and energetic performances from the percussionists.
With our bold yet delightful dances combined with the youthful medley by the percussions and the aesthetically brilliant light arts, GAYA2012: Luminary will surely bring a well-rounded exotic and memorable night to the audience.

Annual Indonesian cultural show at Singapore Management University (SMU)
Since GAYA’s debut back in 2007, we have always challenged ourselves to reinvent and improve the show year after year. Initially structured as a story-based musical inspired by classic Indonesian stories such as Gajah Mada (2008) and Sitti Nurbaya (2010), we have shifted our focus into a performance-based show involving iconic musical and dance items from Indonesia. Our last GAYA, Forte (2011) was the first time we adopted this new concept and if the thunderous applause of the audience were any indication, the change worked out rather well.
GAYA is an annual arts and cultural production by SMU Komunitas Indonesia (SMUKI). It is a platform for Indonesians studying in SMU to showcase the beauty and richness of our homeland culture. SMUKI is a well-recognized Indonesian cultural club in the university, with a growing number of active members over the years that allow it to deliver dynamics student activities in SMU.
